Universities need to teach the truth

Employers of the future need to make a rapid shift to sustainable business models. But to make that happen, they need a well-educated workforce.

Then how come most universities don’t teach the full extent of the climate- and sustainability crisis? How is the workforce of the future supposed to solve problems they don’t even understand?

The French student manifesto, launched in October 2018 reached 30.000 signatures from students all across Europe. This lead to a series of talks with French business leaders, academic institutions and politicians which heavily influenced the national debate towards sustainability issues.

Now, it’s time for the next step. Climate and sustainability education needs to be improved.

Agree to this campaign if you think it’s time to teach the truth about the environmental crisis. Agree to this campaign if you want to read the French education minister’s response. Together, we can improve our education.

Concrete demands:
Today’s understanding of the big picture about the climate crisis is limited to those who chose to study sustainability at university. But an ambitious plan to fight against and adapt to climate change requires everyone’s energy for every decision to be made accordingly. We demand that every student graduating from university in any field has a complete understanding of the issue at stake. This implies for each of them to understand how urgent the situation is, to know the order of magnitude of the different emission sources, to understand the complex links between climate change and energy, agriculture, materials. This knowledge should be acquired in compulsory courses for everyone.

What’s more, tackling the climate crisis require to transform radically our means of production: in addition to these compulsory courses, climate change should be included in the way marketing, electrical engineering, architecture or any other specialty is taught.
