Climate love for Google's 100% renewable cloud

It’s easy to think of the Internet as a purely virtual world. The Cloud sounds fluffy, light, dreamy and innocent. Data syncs instantly and magically across our devices. We connect wirelessly with anyone, anywhere in the world, using nothing more than our phone and a WiFi signal.

The reality is very different: the Internet has a surprising environmental impact. It relies on a vast network of tangible infrastructure and electricity-guzzling buildings called data centres. Most of these are currently powered by dirty fossil fuels.

Big business is, surprisingly, already leading the charge in fighting this problem. Google managed to switch its entire operations to 100% renewable energy in 2017 and runs some of the most energy efficient data centres in the world.

This is way ahead of their competitors and it gives me hope for a fossil-free Internet.

Agree with this campaign if you want to give Google the credit they deserve. All data centres should join in too. If a huge global Internet company can go 100% renewable, then there’s no excuse for all other data centres - they should do the same.
